01 Swiss Geoparks

Swiss GeoGuide is offered by Swiss Geoparks.

The association of Swiss geoparks – Swiss Geoparks – was founded in 2025. It is committed to geodiversity through preserving and using our natural and cultural heritage. Geodiversity is the counterpart of biodiversity: non-living nature. It covers the diversity of rocks, landforms, soils and waters and the processes that shape them. Together, geodiversity and biodiversity make up the entire diversity of nature on our Earth.

Swiss Geoparks promotes geotourism and supports georegions on their way to becoming a UNESCO Global Geopark. This requires well-trained GeoGuides in all parts of the country: in parks and future geoparks, at GeoSites, on geotrails and at GeoEvents. The association connects the bodies responsible for the geoparks in Switzerland and is building a competence centre for this purpose. You can find the members here.

02 Swiss GeoGuides

Swiss GeoGuides are self-employed guides with a sound training in geology. They offer tours and field trips in their region and throughout Switzerland. They explain geological processes and the cultural and historical background of a landscape. People who understand a landscape value it more: in this way Swiss GeoGuides help to preserve our geological heritage.

Swiss GeoGuides have no official authority. They do, however, work closely with rangers and park guides. Ideally they are already park guides, rangers, hiking leaders or mountain guides who want to deepen and pass on their geological knowledge.

The training was designed as part of the Innotour project “Promoting geotourism in Switzerland” 2026/2027. It builds on the GeoGuide Sardona training in eastern Switzerland. The UNESCO World Heritage Site Swiss Tectonic Arena Sardona has been training GeoGuides since 2005, around 100 so far.

The Swiss Geoparks association supports the training financially. The geotourism competence centre arranges guided tours and will regularly offer further training so that quality remains high.
